I learned to crochet when I was 13. A neighbor lady, I babysat for, showed me how. I didn’t know what I was actually doing, but put it down and picked it back up, throughout the years. Fast forward to 2011. I was getting ready to be a surrogate. Maybe it was the hormones and maybe it was the creativity, in me, screaming to get out. It took one post on FB, asking if anyone would order, if I started a crochet business. By morning, I had 10 orders! I love crocheting. I’ve done it for so long, its easy. It’s comfortable and I’m confident about my talent. It makes pursuing a business possible. They say if you do something you love, you wont work a day in your life… The art sells itself. I remember the first year I started my FB crochet page, I got pictures back from customers of infant photo shoots and opening gifts on Christmas morning. I literally cried. I was so honored to have my creations be a part of someone’s special memories. I have been able to maintain my little business/hobby for the last 3 years and plan to continue for as long a I still have time and dexterity in my fingers. Like I said earlier, the Art sells itself.
I hate sales. I have always refused to work in sales. I never said I wasn’t good at it. I believe that when you are genuinely passionate about something people can feel it and it sells itself. I like to call myself a “cheerleader” more than a sales person. I can’t help it, I get excited when I find something magical, something that works. Then, I cant help but share, I want to scream it from the rooftops!!
In my day job, I have the opportunity to run a lot of groups. I love groups. Of course, I facilitate a “Creative Exploration” group. All and ANY art. I preach about utilizing the arts to escape from a reality in which you cannot physically escape. WRITE.READ.LISTEN TO MUSIC.PLAY AN INSTRUMENT.DRAW. DOODLE/ZENTANGLE. CROCHET/KNIT….whatever works. I truly believe these things, so it makes it an EASY sell. I know it, I live it, I love it.
In this day and age, the internet makes it easy for people to share their art. Anyone can sell on Etsy or Ebay or Facebook. Becoming an entrepreneur (at least as a side gig) is accessible with little, to no, risk. So go for it!! Try it out, you make the rules. Besides, what if it could turn into something AMAZING….
Share your passions, share your JOY- It’s contagious.
